The Travelling Musicians by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm
You know the Brothers Grimm for their darker fairy tales, but 'The Travelling Musicians' (sometimes called 'The Bremen Town Musicians') is one of their most charming and upbeat stories. It's a quick read with a big heart.
The Story
A donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster are all facing the same grim fate. Their owners think they're too old to be useful. The donkey is to be sold, the dog and cat are to be drowned, and the rooster is headed for the soup pot. So, they each run away. They meet on the road and decide to band together. Their new plan? To go to the city of Bremen and become street musicians.
That night, tired and hungry, they spot a lighted cottage in the woods. It's occupied by a gang of robbers enjoying a feast. The animals hatch a simple but brilliant plan. They stack on top of each other—donkey on the bottom, then the dog, then the cat, with the rooster on top—right outside the window. Then, on a signal, they all let out their cries at once: the donkey brayed, the dog barked, the cat meowed, and the rooster crowed. The terrifying racket sends the robbers fleeing into the night, convinced a monster is attacking. The four friends then feast on the leftover food and settle in for a cozy sleep, having found a much better home than they ever expected.
Why You Should Read It
On the surface, it's a funny story about animals scaring robbers. But look a little closer, and it's really about resilience. These characters are written off by society. Instead of accepting that, they choose a new purpose—becoming musicians—even if it's a bit of a silly dream. What I love most is that they don't win by being strong or magical. They win by being clever and working as a team. Each animal's unique 'voice' is a weakness to their old owners, but together, those voices become their greatest strength. It's a powerful little metaphor about community and using what you have. The ending is perfectly satisfying—they don't need fame in Bremen; they've already found safety, friendship, and a full belly.
Final Verdict
This is a perfect story for anyone who needs a quick, uplifting read. It's fantastic for reading aloud to kids—the animal sounds are always a hit—but there's enough cleverness in it for adults to appreciate, too. If you're a fan of classic fables where the underdogs (and under-cats, and under-roosters) win the day through wit and cooperation, you'll adore this tale. It's a gentle, timeless reminder that it's never too late to start over, especially with good friends by your side.
